A HURRICANE.

(Per Press Association.)' Auckland, last night.

The s.s. Taviuni, which has arrived from the Eastern Pacific, reports that the hurricane swept moat of the islands of the Cook Group. Considerable damage was done at Mangaia. The seas reached a tremendous height, and swept the island right up to the village. The inhabitants vacated their dwellings and fled to the I hills. JHardly a house is intact. . The beautiful church of the London Missionary Society and the old courthouse were much damaged. The house of King John and I most of the stores were; wrockod. The I banana, orange and cocoanut plantations j wore wrecked. Galvanised iron was car- I ried about like paper. No shipments of I fruit from these islands are expaoted until J May next. J 1
