BAND CONTEST
'(Pen Press Association.') Auckland, yesterday. At the Band contest to-day the B flat trombones competition resulted ; D. Boyd, Kaikorai, 114 points out of 120, 1 ; H. Taylor, Newton Battalion, 106, 2; O. Coon, Waihi Federal, and C. McConnell, Tara-‘ naki Garrison, 104, a tie for third. Tho North Island Bands Association has decided to ohargo L 25 to centres takinf the band contest in future. - 'Hawera' hai guaranteed £SSO for next year’s contest. Auckland, last night. The North Island Band-Contest continued to day in His Majesty’s Theatre, where there was a good attendance, especially in the eveniag. B flat cornet solos were especially interesting in view of the two champions, J. Parker (Wellington Garrison) and J. Buckley (Wanganui Garrison) competing against each other for the first time. The following are the results of the B flat trombone solos D. Boyd (Kaikorai) 114 marks -1, H. Taylor (Ist Battalion Anokland) 106 2nd, O. Cook (Waihi Federal) 104, and C. McConnell (Taranaki ’Garrison) 104 tying for. 3rd place; also competed—S. Sly (Wanganui Garrison) 102, G. Coutts (Auckland Garrison) 100, G. Tangye (Hauraki) 98, T. H. Lamb (Wanganui Garrison) 98, H. Wynyard (DovoDport) 96, J. Bichards (Gisborne City) 96, S. MoCleary (Waihi Federal) 90, B. P. Andrews (Wellington Garrison) 86. Tenor E flat born solos—C. Forest, (Wanganui Garrison) 116 marks Ist, J, Jenson (Wanganui Garrison) 104 2nd, D. Whelan (Kaikaroi) 102 and J. S. (May (Hastings) 102 tied for third place ; also oompetod—A. Williams (Hauraki) and S. Cross (Buahine Battalion) and B. Blythe (Wanganui Garrison) 100 each, C. Bryant (Hauraki) F. Myers (Ist Battalion Auckland) and B. Douglas (Gisborne W. Bamsey (Devonport) 96, B. -Hull (Wellington Garrison) W. Coulthard (Taranaki Garrison) 94,8. Nicholson (Wellington Garrison) and N. Williams (Hantaki) 92, B. Craig (Impey’s City) 90, Pratt (Taranaki Garrison) and J. A. Lloyd (Buahine Battalion) 88. The judge said ho had no difficulty in deciding tho winder of this event. - \
I B flat cornet solos. —This competition* I proved one of the most interesting of the I contests, A larga number of performers played so well that the judge had no I small difficulty in coming to a decision. I There was considerable disappointment at I the non-appearance of J. Barker, and the Wellington champion, who drew for his I place, but did not play during the evening, I Messrs W. Ewart and J. Ewart, two young members of the Auckland Garrison Band, played bo well for their years that a gentleman in the audience donated to one of the officials sufficient to provide them each with a silver medal.
