At the Auckland Supreme Court Bertie Lyons, who came forward for sentence upon charges of cattle-stealing and forgery at Tokomaru, was asked what he had to say. He pleaded in reply that he was “ only a boy.” His Honor: Yes ; but you are a boy who has been stealing before apparently. You have been oonvioted of numbers of offences, including the theft of your mate’s watch. Is that correct ? Prisoner : Yeß. Do you want to say anything more ? Yes ; .1 want to know if you can lot me out on probation. His Honor said that it was always very painful to have to send a boy of suoh an age as the prisoner to gaol. He had committed numerous offences, and this time it was deliberate theft and forgery. As he was so young ho would not sentence him to a very lengthy term. A sentence of one year’s imprisonment with hard labor was then passed.
