Mr Armstrong, engineer in charge of railway works, Kaitaratahi, advertises for a couple of men. The Gazette notifies that a patent has been secured by J. B. Jaokson, Gisborne, for an improved road plough. Captain Edwin reported yesterday : “ Moderate to strong winds from between south and oast and north-east ; glass fall ; tides high ; sea heavy swell.” Mr S. Harrison, of the local telegraph staff, has been transferred to Taihape. His place will be taken by Mr Fowler, from Rotorua.

A mob of 562 young mixed cattle, in charge of Mr J. W. Fearn, crossed the Wairoa bridge last Friday. They were from Waikato, en route to Gisborne, via Nuhaka. At 7.33 yesterday morning twenty homing pigeons were released from the s.s. Waihi in the Bay. The birds were sent by the Petone Homing Club to the care of Mr J. H. C. Bond, manager of the Union Stoamship Company. The Cook County Council meet tomorrow morning at 10.30 to deal with tenders, pass accounts, etc. The meeting, in view of the races, will then be adjourned until Monday morning. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before Mr J. W. Bright, J.P., a first offender was convicted'of drunkenness and discharged. A native, named Whare Turangi, was convicted of drunkenness, and fined ss, with 2s costs, it being his second offence. The s.s. Herald worked Tokomaru and I Waipiro yesterday morning, and then j proceeded to Port Awanui. She works back to Tuparoa and Waipiro, and is expected to olear the Coast to-morrow, The following will represent the Gisborne Cricket Club in their match against Common, Shelton and Co. at the Victoria Domain this afternoon: Gibson (2), I Doyle (2), iStevons, Torkington, Lasker, I Koro, Butler, Peebles, Featon. A settler had an unpleasant experience I yesterday. He had to ride into town to I catch the steamer, and stayed for the night { at a country house so that he oould get into town early, in the morning. When I he got up at an early hour he found that j bis horse, saddle and bridle had been stolen.

Owing to the death of the owner, Mr G. E. G. Riohardson, tho racehorses Tonderghie, Whakawehi and Melba have boon scratched for all engagements at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s mooting, commencing to-day. The horses were shipped to Napier yesterday. The riders at today’s races will wear crape bands as a mark of respect for the memory of deceased.

The many friends of Mr Chas. Butler, of Rose Hotel, Port Awanui, will regret to hear that he passed away at an early hour yesterday morning at Tokomaru. Deceased was well known on the Coast,

whore he had lived for the paßt 6 or 7 years. Lately he suffered from an internal complaint, for which he had undergone treatment. Upon visiting Gisborne a couple of weeks ago he appeared to be in good health, but on his journey home, when between Tolago and Tokomaru, he was taken ill, and had to be conveyed to i the latter place on a stretcher. He was attended by Dr Davij, of Waipiro, who on Monday morning summoned Dr Morrison. I The latler left Gisborne at 4.30 a.m. on I

Monday, and did the journey to Tokomaru in eight hours. An operation was undertaken in the hope of affording tho patieat some relief, but it was found that his con-

dition was beyond surgical aid. The ca3e was not one of appendicitis as previously stated. The flags on many of the hotels and business places in Gisborne were flying at half-mast yestorday out of respect to the memory of deeeaxed. The late Mr Butler was a member of the Turangauui

Lodge No. 7 U.A.0.D., and owinfj} o the death of their brother the Lodge has postponed its harmony gathering which was advertised for fco-night. The body of deceased was taken to Port Awanui on

board the steamer Herald, and the funeral

will take place to-day.
