HARBOR ELECTION.

;(To the Editor Gisborne Times. Sir,—l have been turning in ray mind who are the best candidates to support at to-day’s harbor election, and after careful eontideration I should like all who desire to see our district progress on sound and prudent lines to support Mr Whinray and Captain Kennedy for the town and Messrs Rees and Matthews for the country. Whinray is a well-tried horse, and you can always rely upon him for staunch work when it is to bo done, and he readily detects danger, and when ho detects it he at once becomes oautious, which is more than a good few of our public men do. Captain Kennedy’s knowledge and experience will bo of great value and service to us, aud we cannot at this juncture afford to reject his services. The pity ia that he had not offered his services before. Messrs Rees and Matthews are both men opposed to the present extravagant administration of tho Board, and will at once assist in calling a halt in the wioket waste that is going on in the present administration. ' I have heard it suggested from the country that there might be some danger in these two gentlemen, portionlarly the former, trying to force some big scheme on the distriot which it cannot afford. Ido not regard this as a danger, for the ratepayers must be consulted on any new works of importance, and they can use tho curb which is in their hands if need be. But the country ratepayers should bear in mind a change is needed. Over LIO.OOO a year is being collected by the Harbor Board for ratos itnd wharfages, nd what is there to show for it ? A change is needed, and there are some other gentlemen standing whom I would like to vote for if I studied personal Cooling, but JL cannot conscientiously vote for them for the reason that they seem to have got into a grove and cannot get out of it. —I am, 6tC ’ W. DOUGLAS LYSNAR.
