AUCKLAND NEWS

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, yesterday. The Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company, during 18. days ended January 31st, treated 2570 tons of ore for bullion valued at £4394. The first return of the current year from the Waihi Gold Mining Company shows that during the three weeks ended January 28th there were treated 21,400 tone of ore for bullion valued at £43,777. In acknowledging the reoeipt from the Auokland Harbor Board of planß and specifications of the proposed Queen street wharf reconstruction for approval of the Governor-in-Couuoil, the Secretary of the Murine Department made certain criticisms, and asked for additional information on certain points. The matter was discussed at the- mooting of the Harbor Board yesterday. The Chairman stated that ho had, while in Wellington, unofficially drawn the attention of Mr Allport to the faot that the previous reports of Mr Hales wore incorrect. This had been pointed out to the Marine Engineer, and yet he had sent the same report in. The Hon. E. Mitohelson: It shows what ga’oots they are. Mr Fhilson said it s emed that the work of the Board was being delayed by the inoompetenoy of the Marino Department, who wore unable to nnderstand the plans. Ho moved that the correspondence be referred to the Board’s solicitors, with the object of aßoertaing whether the objection taken was a valid one. He could not see what the Marine Department had to do with roads and railways. Mr Walker moved ob an amendment, “That the reply of the Engineer bo sont to tbe Marino Department.” The Hon. E. Mitchelson said that it was absurd that the Marino Department should not have taken the trouble to ascertain the facts of the case. The Chairmen pointed out that it was tbe duty of the Marino Department to eoo that there was no obstruction to navigation, and that tbe Railway Department had olroady agreed to their portion of the work. Mr Walker’s motion was agreed to.. The Board of Education decided to apply to the Government for a grant to establish a training college for teachers at Wellesley street sohool, regarding it as hopeless to ask for a new building.
