MASTER BAKERS,
MR. MCCARTHY’S TROUBLES.
(For Press Association.) , Weilmgfcon, lasi night. Mr EL McCarthy, of Wellington, who resigned the secretaryship of the New | Zealand Master Bakers* Association aft | tho conference at Dunedin, has returned to Wellington.
Interviewed by the Post, be says it could hardly be called a' conference. “ Judging by results and the published reports of what was done the conference was only a waste of time and money. There was no policy, no order, and no re* gularity ; in fact, there was nothing practical discussed, and nothing done thaft would benefit the trade at large. Then, again, in the case of one of the unions, ift would perhaps have been better if its ,representatives had been left &t home.*' Respecting his resignation of the secretaryship, Mr McCarthy said it was'the M only course open to him after certain % “ rail-sitting*’ performances by those in authority. In connection with his trip to f| Sydney in the latter portion of last year, he had looked forward to the conference as ~ J an opportunity to justify his position and defend himself, but he was forestalled by i ■: receiving a communication on Friday last •/; to the effect that the committee set up to I * decide his status had resolved thaft in tho beßt interests of the Association he should v resign the secretaryship. H* attributes this action to the fact that it did not suift some of the delegates that he should havs ■*** an opportunity of vindicating himself and JI;V proving that he attended the Sydney con- ■ inference in hia official capacity. , y 3 At the Master Bakers’ Conference in M Sydney Mr McCarthy read a paper on tha ? arbitration laws of New Zealand, a prothat evoked some severe persons! a. ’ criticism from the Xiabor Department. McCarthy says the Association has useful body, and so far as the trade is concerned has done some good, buft its future depends largely on the management. He concluded by saying Shat Christchurch and Auckland Master BakoreV .’2, Unions had endorsed the view he had expressed in Sydney respecting the Arbitra* Titian Act. f
