MOTU NOTES

(From Our Own .C.orrespon.ilen.t.)[ t February 7. ? A mob of 600 sheep passed through 1 here to-day, en route to Opotiki. They are the property of Mr Gordon, ana the flock was procured at Messrs "Williams £ and Kettle’s sale at Karaka. t A feature of the Stock.-and Produce t Bureau, inaugurated by the Motu branch t of the Farmers’ Union, is that it gives the r description of everything for sale, if stock, l the breeder’s name. J The weather for the past few days has 1 been somewhat dull. * Rumour says that it is not the intention of the Government to put money on the 1 estimates annually for ths continuation of the Fahkihi Road, but to do only what will be required by the settlers in the Uratawa East survey district. If such is the ease I maintain it is not only a disgrace, but a hugo misconception on their part. The Government must remember and recognise that this road will be an invaluable asset to two large and important districts, viz., the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay. The sooner they are united in the bonds of commerce the better it will bo for both parties. At present the eystem adopted by settlers in and around Opotiki and Whakatane is that they drive their fat stock to Rotorua, and send them by rail to Auckland. I have had the opinion of a number of settlers on the matter, and they assured me that if the Pabkihi road was completed their fat stock would go to Gisborne. What would that moan? Our exports would be increased, and it would raise us another step up the ladder to odo of the most important commercial towns in the colony. Bay of Plenty settlers would have moro remuneration. The matter deserves the 1 serious consideration of our own member, Mr Carroll, and the member for tho Bay 1 of Plenty, Mr Herrios. Let them put their heads together and work; for the ) common interest, so that people may say, > when “ they are with those that rest, ; asleep within tho tomb,” it was Messrs 7 Carroll and Herries that made our disv fcriefc. : r A meeting to square np the work of the 7 Sports Club was held on Saturday night 3 in Mr Hansen’s Hall. The balance sheot 1 showed a credit of L 9 I7s 6d. it The cricket team to play tho Opotiki u cracks on the 14th prox. leaves here next Sunday. A number of settlors will accompany tbo team, and will take advantage of the show, races, and excursion to White Island. '•
