A NOVEL STRIKE. By Telegraph —Press Association —Copyright • Melbourne, Feb. 7. The Postmaster-General is not yet able to ascertain how far the Orient Company is within its rights in refusing to take British mails aboard the Orontea at foreign ports. The company never refused ordinary cargo for wont of room, and it is strange to refuse mails, which pay a higher froight. In case the Commonwealth Government is dependent on the will of any one company, a suggestion will be made that mails at Marseilles Bhould bo sent by , tho Messageries’ steamer to Colombo and placed aboard the Orient steamer for Australia. A representative of the Orient Company says his own view >s that the company cannot be forced to take English mails at a foreign port. He remarks that it i 3 the experience of most men that they who need a thing must pay for it. His company could not bo expected to furnish a mail ocntract for nothing.
