A SERIOUS CASE.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. John Hughes, a married man, living at Avondale, was charged in the Police Court with having assaulted a girl of 18, named Bose Thomas, at Avondale, with intent to commit rape. For the defence it was sought. to show that the prosecutrix was mistaken in identifying Hughes as her assailant. Accused pleaded not guilty. He reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Ho was allowed bail in his personal recognisance of <£2oo and two others of JUOO each.
