TRINITY YOUNG MEN’S CLUB.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL. Tho Trinity Young Men’s Club was officially opened yesterday afternoon by tho holding of swimming sports and an aquatic oarnival. Thu port of the river selected for tho occasion was tho stretch from tho Whataupuko bridgo to tho proposed Band Rotunda site on tho Point. Tho woathor\waS all that could bo desired, aud during tt}o afternoon that part of Read’s Quay osplanado, lately handod over to tho Borough by tho Beautifying Association, presented an animated appearance. Tho Whataupoko bridge was also linod with intorosted spectators, while craft of evory description plied up and down tho river, allowing those on board to follow tho racing more closely thau those on tho shore. Tho events wore followed through out with tho closest attention, and applauso was frequent and impartial. Tho judge of tho races, Mr A. ,W. Rees, who was assisted by Messrs J. W. Bright and Coleman, held no sinecure, and had sevorui very close finishes to decide, but gave complete satisfaction to tbo competitors and tho public alike. The oloso manner in which most of tho racos finished must have been vory gratifying to tho hand;osppers, Messrs L. B. Sherrill and W. S. McCredie: Tho long programme, as advertised, was carried through without a
hitch, the events following hot-foot on
each other’s heels. Tho interest in the events was never allowed to flag, and although the weather turned cold towards tbo fiuisli, the spectators remained until tho last event bad been deoidod. Mr W. Millor was starter, and got tho competitors away well on all occasions. Tho president of the club (tho Rev. Dawson Thomas) and the secretary (Mr B. Bright), assisted by a strong committee, woro responsible for the success of tho sports and the completeness of the arrangements. Tho City Baud, under Bandmaster Chrisp, were in attendance, and enlivened tho proceedings with a fine programme, which was much appreciated. The following arc the results :
Opon Maiden Race, 75 yards—F. Da Lautour 1, Q. Willock 2. This was a splendid race, all the competitors finishing in a buneb, with Do Lautour on the outside first, and Willock on the inside half a second in advauce of the other competitors. Schoolboys’ Race (under 12), 35 yards— Cramp I, O’Meara 3. The distance was rather short to test the mettle of
lads, and, as in the preceding race, a yard would have covered the lot. Several of he bois raced on to the 50 yards' mark. Club Handicap, 7Q yards (open to memcoca only)—-W. Luttrell, 20secs, 1, li. C. Murphy, scratch, 2, W. Cos, 17 sees, 3. Luttrell and Cos led until within fivo yards of the finishing post, when Murphy ehal lenged them. He passed Cos almost on the post, but was unable to overtake the limit man. T. Harding drew up at the 50 yards’ flag, thinking the race was finished, and Willock broke away before his turn and had to retire. School Championship, 50 j Willock 1, E. Luttrell -2, T. yj Open Handicap, 100 yards—(l7sec) 1, J. Martin (17sec) 2, P. Bayly (17see) 3. This was another splendid race, Martin and Loisel leading stroke and stroke about. Loisel bad the luck to have his turn in froDt when the flag was passed, and won a splendid race, with Bavly a good third. Long Dive —H. A. Hamilton 1, Whitfield 2, Ingram 3. These were the only starters. Hamilton just failed to reach the 50yds mark. Whitfield also dived well, but went off at a taDgent and came up alongside the bank about a couple of yurds short of the 35yds flag. Neat Header —E. Luitcoll and Hamilton were bracketed for first place. The
former dropped into the water like a Mohawk, with scarcely a ripple, but he went down vertically and took bis own time about comiDg to the surface again. Murphy, on the other hand, went in at the orthodox angle, and was on the surface again before he was missed. A. Willock’s diviDg also received favorable com-
ment from the shore. Club Championship, 100 yards (for members only)—B. K. Murphy 1, P.
Bayly 2, B. Willock 3. These were the only competitors, the old WaDganui College boy’s (Murphy) record for the dstance evidently showing the other entrants the hopelessness of trying to secure the championship medal presented by Mr G. B. Oman. Morphy forged ahead from the start, Bayly and Willock also swimming gamely. Bayly made a big effort to overhaul the leader, but was unable to reduce the gap. Barrel Race—This mirth-provoking event seems as popular as ever, and the antics of the swimmers in mounting their capricious steeds, only to be bucked or tumbled haphazard into the stream again, caused the groatest amusement. B. C. Murphy was the only competitor to pass the winning post with any'command upon his steed at all, but instead of riding it he
was hanging on underneath. Of the others W. Luttrell was the most persistent in endeavouring to fulfil the conditions of the race by passing the pest on the barrel. When the bell went no one bad succeeded in doing so. The greasy boom brought out a field of 14, and their efforts to reach the end of tho pole, which was thrown out from ono of the piers of the bridgo, was greatly enjoyed, as were the attitudes struck when the men could no longer keep their balance and shot into the river. W. Luttrell was first aod C. Gordon second. Boys undor 10 years, 21 yards—J. Chrisp 1, H. Chrisp 2, L. Hackett 3, W. Walters 4.
Belay Race—Wanganui Collega, Old Boys team, consisting of Willock (2), Loisel and B. C. Murphy, 1 ; Ingram’s earn 2. This event was left until rather
ate in the afternoon, being swum about 5 o’clock. The distance between boat and boat was 25yds, and the Wanganui team gave a fine exhibition of short distance
swimming. Four-oared outrigger race—Gisborne Rowing Club’s crew 1, Poverty Bay 2, Trinity Club 3. This was a close race, the victory being in a large measure due to steering of the Gisborne coxswain, who gained a good quarter of a length at the point." The Gisborne crow wore not seen at their best, and it was some time before they got into each othor’s stroke. They finished well, gaining close on a quarter of a leDgth coming up the straight. Poverty Bay finished almost half a length behind, with Trinity Club o length away third. The crew of tho winning team were: Donkin (stroke), Williams, Smith and Swinnerton. Poverty Bay were represented by Smith (stroke), Pool, Hackett, and McConnell, while the Trinity crew comprised Rodie (stroke), Bright, Hansen and Nolan.
The energetic manner in which the sports woro carried out, and the keen interest taken in the proceedings by tbo peop3e of Gisboroe, augurs well for the future snceess of the Trinity YouDg Men’s Club, and it is to be hoped that the Club will prove as successful in other branches of athletics as it has shown itself to be on tho river.
DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.
There was a largo gathering at tho Holy Trinity Schoolroom last evening when the distribution of prizes took place. The stage presented a most attractive nppearsnae, having been prettily decorated with flowers and foliage, this work being undertaken by Misses Ferris. Harding, Davies, and Redstone. The Rev Dawson Thomas presided, and prior to distributing the prizes, expressed great pleasure at the success of the carnival. He thanked all who had assisted, and especially those who had given trophies. Ho hoped to see many similar gatherings. During the evening a number of musical items were contributed. Mr Percy Adair sang “ Tell her I love her so” in a pleasing manner, and Mr Dalrymple gave an expressive rendering of “ Awake.” Mr E. D. Smith sang the “ Mighty Deep” in good style, and Mr J. W. Bright gave an excellent recitation entitled ” Advico'to young men.” Mr Barlow was encored for bis rendering of “ Alice, where art thou,” and responded with “ Gondola Dreams,” which was much appreciated. Mr E. Chrisp played the accompaniments with much success.
