BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of tho Borough Counoil was hold last evening, whontho following members wore pvosout: —His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. Townley)- Crs 4 MorrisoD, Wainray, Hopburn, Miller, Harding and Somervell. 1 TECHNICAL EDUCATIGN. f A communication was received from the 3 Farmers’ Union Provincial Exeoutivo, 1 stat'ng Mr Hogbon, Secretary for EduoaJ lion, proposed to leoture on technical rural education in about three weeks’ time. Ho suggested that tho Executive should obtain tho co-oporntion of tho Council in order 1 that Mr Hogben could meet all the looal bodies interested. Tho Counoil agreed to 00-oporato with other local bodies in tho matter. BAND CONTEST. The Council decided to grant the City Band the sum of £lO towards tho oost of oxpeuses to tho band contest. TELEPHONE FACILITIES.

Mr Jex Blake wrote asking for a donation towards tho cost of the To Arai Valloy telephone line, which would take in tho site of tho water source at To Arai. It was decided to contribute tho sum of ifilO, provided tho Council had the right to connect and uso tho lino when they desired. TECHNICAL CLASSES. The Committeo appointed to consider tho question of a donation to tho above olassos recommended that tho Council should grant tho school tho sum of £2O. Councillors approved of the vote, and on tho motion of Cr Harding tho report was adopted. SHOP HOURS. i Mr C. H. Ambridgo, Chairman of tho Shop Hours Committee, wrote as follows : “In roply to your memo, re petition and hours of closing being allowed to bo forwarded, I am instructed by my committee to inform you that at the general meetings of Gisborne tradespeople we, the committee, woro appointed to deal with this matter in trade sections, and having carried out our cootruot desire that the same bo forwarded to the Miuister of Labor to be dealt with accordingly, not having boon appointed to obtnin signatures under the other condition, we now leave tho matter in your hands, and have no other report to make."

It was decided to forward the petition on to tho Minister of Labor. REMOVAL OF RUBBISH. Replying to a letter written by Mr E. O. Mai thews in regard to tho removal of rubbish in tho suburbs, the Council decided to inform tho writer that they could not at the present time undertake the work in outlying districts. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. Tho Borough Inspector reported as follows: —“Since your last meeting I have been inspecting ~in the borough, and find most of the places in a satisfactory condition of cleanliness. Work at tbo abattoirs is still proceeding slowly, and accordio" to the amount of work yet to be done it will bo aomo considerable time before tho works are ready for uso. There is a considerable amount of filling in and levelling off around the different buildings which "could now bo gono on with. If your Council wishes the same to bo put in band it could be started and completed at the same time as the contract. No fencing posts have as yet come to band, although they have been under order for the last six months.” The report was adopted. OVERBEER’S REPORT. The following report was received from the Borough Overseer: —“The weather beiDg favorable since your last meeting, the tarring has been the principal work done.
