PENCARROW LIGHT .
[Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A master mariner trading out of WeiI lingtoc, discussing tho proposed low-level I light at Penearrow, Wellington Heads, I suggests that tho Department be asked to place a low-level coastal light at a point further out along the coast, either at Tongue Point or at Cape Terawhiii—the latter for preference. Tho main features and approximate distances along the coast from Ponoarrow to Torawhiti are as follows :—Penearrow to Sinclair Head, six miles; Sinclair Head to Tongue Point, two miles and a half; Tongue Point to Oterangi Bay, three miles and a half; Oteiangi Bay to Capo Terawhiti, about a milo further in. There is foul ground along tho coast in tho neighborhood of Tongue Point. The most notable of tho dangerous places are Tom’s Rock (whore Nambueca ,vas supposed to have struck), Karori Reck, und the Luna. To show whore foul ground is, and to guide large and small vessels until they have picked up Penearrow, a light at Tongue Point, or at Torawhiri, would bo of the utmost service. At the latter placo it would show further round Cook Struits. The low level coast in these parts is often visible in a fog when Penearrow is obscured, and plenty of suitable sites, 70it to 100 ft above water level could bo found for a low level lights. Then besides its use for navigation, such a lighthouse would also bo an observing and signal station connected by telephone with Wellington.
