The Gisborne Raciog Club’s acceptances and entries close at 9 o’clock this evening. The Harbor Board elections on the 13th February will bo beoteen the hours of 9 a,in. and 6 p.in. A case of horse-etoaliug at Waipiro will be investigated at the Police .'Court this morning. Messrs Redstone and Sons’ coach leaves for Morere and Wairoa at 7 o’clock tomorrow morning. A couple of old age pensions were renewed j'csterday. bv Mr Barton, S.M. Tho damaged iron, being salvage of school buildings, Derby street, will be sold by Messrs Williams aod Kettle to-day. Mails despatched from Melbourne via Brindisi on December 28th arrived in London on January 28ib. Messrs W. D. Lysnar and A. F. Kennedy return to Gisuorno by tho Mokoia on Saturday afternoon, after their excursion to the Sounds. Captain Edwin wired yesterday : “ Strong winds to galo from between south and south west ; glass fall slowly ; tides high ; sea heavy ; rain probable.” Tho swimming carnival in connection with the opening of tho Young Men’s Club will bo held to morrow afternoon, and promises to attract a largo number of spectators. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. and Dolgoty and Co. hold their annual sheep sale at Mr W. Hutchinson’s yards, Pubatikotiko, on tho 14th inst. The present entries comprise 5000 sheep. Mr W. T. from Mr HarrisoD, who is leaving the district, will hold an unreserved clearing sale at the corner of Cobdon and Berry streets to-day at 2 p.m., of household furniture and effects. Messrs Williams and Kettle hold their first sale of stock at their new yards, Te Karaka, on Friday next. Tho catalogue contains 5500 shoep and 400 head of cattle. A yo<ung lialf-castc named Borti® 3 Lyons, remanded on a charge of forgery, .was brought before Mr W. A. ‘Barton, *S.ill., at the Police Court yestorict'ay. Sergeant McKenzie said l-h® accused was charged with altering a cheque by adding to it the name of the drawer, which had 'been omitted. The facts were that accused had sold' twine cattle to Tele ,Goldsmith, sbeepfarm-er, Port, Awanui, who had given accused a cheque for £1 and 5s in silver. T-he price of the cattle was £5 15s. Goldsmith remembered that he had forgotten to sign the cheque and stopped payment. Some time afterwards the cheque, signed, was presented by Lyons to Mr Jamieson, iTokomaru Bay, and .was cashed by him. .Upon the cheque being presented at the bank it was. returned marked “ Payment stopped.”- Evidence was given by Tele Goldsmith, George G.old smith (his sore) 1 , James Jamieson, and Detective Nixon. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at Auckland, bail being allowed in one sum of £SO and two sureties of £25 each. Accused was further charged with stealing -a cow I and three calves at To Rahul, the I ; property of Tamat-i Kiawai, valued : at £5 15s. Accused pleaded guilty j to this charge also, and was committed for sentence.
