The University Senate amended the statute in regard to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, involving a considerable increase in the work of students for the final B.A. and B.Sc. degrees. The Senate then adjourned until tomorrow. THE TOuVTOANA. WANGANUI, last night. The s.s. Tomoana left the roadstead this morning for London direct. The cargo from Wanganui consists of equal to about 1(5,000 carcases of mutton.; SOUTHLAND NEWS. INVERCARGILL,; last night. 'John Mitchell, a fl'axmill hand at Mason’s Bay, Stewart Island, was drowned through the capsize of a boat whilst out fishing- Deceased was a native of Aberdeen. He was 32 years of age. and arrived in the colony six months ago. ' Glorious weather is now being experienced. The Governor arrived this afternoon to open the new ToWin H'all and Theatre, costing about twenty thousand pounds. The roof of St. Holm's Church caught 'fire this morning, through the heat or the ironwork igniting the woodwork. The brigade suppressed •the outbreak before serious damage was done.
