SENSATIONAL BOLT.
j A sensational bolt took plaoe at Aacki land on Friday afternoon resulting in Father McMillan, of St. Benedict’s Church, being thrown out of a trap in Fast-street, and in a boy named Alfred Hunter being knocked down at the corner of Karangahape Boad and Symonds-street and soriously injured. It appears that as Father McMillan was driving a young horse and trap along Gladstene-street, the horse took fright, and bolted into East-street, towards Symondsstreet. Suddenly it came to a dead stop, with the result that Father McMillan was thrown out, but only received a few bad outs about the arms and hands.
I Believed from control, the animal con I tinuod on its mad career, and turning the 1 corner went at a breakneck Bpeed down towards Karangahape Boad and along the I footpath. As it neared Karangahape Boad I the horse and trap camo into contact with I a boy named Alfred Hunter, who was anI able to get out of the way. The wheel of I the trap struck him ou the stomach, knoek- ! ing him down. The horse continued its career, and at the Caledonian Hotel it colI lidcd with a team of horses which were I being driven by Mr John Bowse. As a roI suit ono of tho horses sustained a nasty gash upon the shoulder, and the shaft of | tho vehicle was broken. Tho bolting horse I was then captured, When tho spectators wont to tho assist- I j ance of the boy Hunter thoy found he was I unconscious. At the hospital it was found I that the boy’s condition was very serious I I indeed, and an operation was deemed necessary. This was performed by Dr Scott, who found that tho lad.was suffer- I I ing from severe abdominal injuries. No I bones were broken. When enquiries were I mado on Friday night it was stated that I Hunter was still in a precarious condition. Ho is only 10 years of age, and resides 1 with his father at Taupaki. He was on a visit to Auckland, where he was staying with his grandfather, !Mt Henry Hunter, at Ashton Boad, Mount Eden. It was while his grandfather was showing him I round tho city that the accident happened. I
