SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
i 'IMPOBTANT POINTS BEFEBBED TO MINISTEB. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A point of interest which ia constantly cropping up and causing friction in educational circles, ia touched upon in a letter written to the Minister for Education by Mr Wilford, M.H.B. Tho letter deals with a case at Petone, but, after referring to it, Mr Wilford adds :—“ I desire to bring under yonr attention the anomalous position of school committees in this colony. Clothed with a barren title of little importance, and called upon by education boards to look after all local matters pertaining to the school curriculum*, passed on one side whore the most disastrous local effect may bo brought about through an injudicious appointment, it 13 a wonder to me that men of energy and ability will seek to fill suoh a position. Will you take steps in the hear future to have the powers and functions of school committees defined and elaborated, so as to charge the present state of things under which, though committnes may become liable for wrongdoing or even accident to an. employee, their power on matters of ordinary school appointments is absolutely nil, and their consideration of matters, such as the present application, often not even considered. ”
