The privileges of the Poverty Bay Turf Club will bo offered for sale on Saturday next by Messrs Williams and Kettle. Mr W. J. S. Lichtwark, the well-known violinist, has resumed instruction, in rooms adjoining the London Piano and Music warehouse. At the Wellington Provincial Gun Club meeting prize rnonoy amounting to £l5O was divided among 22 competitors, who oach killed seven birds. The Tikokino correspondent of the Hawke’s Bay Herald states that large mobs of oattlo have been passing through that place from the West Coast, on route for Gisborne. Tho Waipaoa bridge is reportod to be unsafe for heavy traffic, and persons are warned against orossing it with heavy drays or driving a largo number of cattle across it. The Union Company’s fine steamer Manuka is maintaining her reputation for fast steaming, as she reached Auckland at 9 a.m. on Sunday, her passage across being accomplished in 3£ days. James Burgess and Mrs Trudgeon, boarding-house keepers at Potono, were yesterday oonvieted of sly grog-selling, The former was fined £2 and £2 costs ; the latter convicted and ordered to pay £1 8s 6d costs.
A specimen of intorast to entomologists was discovered the other day at Wallabadah, Now South Wales, in the shape of a gigantic looust. It measured between Bin aud Sin in length, and between 7in and Bin in girth near the head. At the Police Court yesterday morniog, before Mr W. A. BartoD, S.M., two offenders were fined for drunkenness. For the more serious offence of being drunk while in charge of horses, Matthew Donnell was fined £l, with costs. At thß Police Court yestorday morning a young man named William Henry Tozer was charged with indecent assault at Poututu. On the application of Sergeant McKenzie a remand was granted for eight days in order to obtain evidence. Bail was not allowed. The Gisborne Tent of Reahabitos held their usual mooting last evening, Bro. T. Holdsworth, Chief Ruler, presiding. A large amount of business was transacted, including the consideration of the business paper to be laid before the meeting of tho District Council of Rocbabites, which will bo hold in Dunedin a fow wooks hence. An aualysis of tho Biblo in State schools referendum in Victoria, rnado at the request of tho Soripture Loaguo, shows that 53,084 persons voted straight out against Soripture lessons in State schools, while 49,599 woro absolutely in favor of the reintroduction of religious touching to State pupils. In tho Poncko Hack Handicap, Spoil galloped on somethiog in front and fell, bringing down Lyrist. Langstono received a fractured collarbone, and Gallagher was severely bruised about the shoulder.

The firm are making a special feature of debt and rent collecting, and persons having money outstanding would do well to place tho collecting of the same in their hands. “To relieve the democracy of New Zealand of their natural duty to maintain
their aged relatives, £978,500 of the taxpayers’ money has faeou squandered,” pleasantly remarks the Liberty Review, “in five and a quarter years in old age pensions, and £15,280 spent in salaries of officials who ‘ administer ' the swindle.” The now auxiliary schooner Kaeo, which has been bnilt to the order of Captain J. H. Skinner, for tho Auckland-East Coast trade, by Messrs Lane and Sons, of Whangaroa, will not reach Auckland until the end of next week. Consequently the pleasure excursion arranged in Auckland for next Saturday has had to be postponed.
The Ballance Rechabite Tent (juvenile) held their fortnightly meeting last evening, Sister Bean, Chief Ruler, in tho chair. After the conclusion of business needlethreading and nail-driving competitions were indulged in by the juniors, much fun being caused thereby. This Tent is now on the up grede, and with the enthusiasm being displayed by the members should soon be-ccino one of the largest juvenile Tents in the colony.

A gonorous donation has boon made to tho Gisborne Library by Mr Arthur Hutchinson, who lias handod to Mr F. JMorgan a choquo for £IOO, which sum is to form tho uuclous of a roforonco library. This will fill a long felt want in connection with tho library, and wo hopo that Mr Hutchinson's gonoroßity will bo followed by others in this district. Tho committoe, with a view of obtaining some first-class works, invito suggestions for reference works.
The Auckland Eloctric Tramways Company intond experimenting with tho dustlaying preparation known as Westrumito" Tho preparation will bo put down on solocted strips of tho roadway in Symonds street and Ponsouby road, whore tho dust nuisance is very pronounced, and tho test should thereforo bo a good one. At tho Auckland Polioo Court a Chinese named Ah Lee ploaded guilty to supplying a boy of seven years with tobacco. He said he was exceedingly sorry, but at the time did not know he was doing an unlawful act. Ho assured tho Bonch it would never happen again. Tho magistrate fined him 20s and costs. Information having been received that tho Hon Jamas Carroll, Nativo Minister, intends paying tho Raglan district a visit early next month, for tho purpose of reporting to the Government on the desirability of the To Akan run being acquired for sottlemont, arrangements aro being mudo for a banquet or social gathering in honor of tho event. The member for Waikato, Mr Lang, is to be invited to bo present, and Mr Groenslade, member of the Crown Lands Board, is likely to sooompany Mr Carroll.
