AN ARTILLERY SENSATION.

BATTERY PRACTISING ON HOLIDAYMAKERS.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The Star states that holidaymakers at Biowa's Bay on Saturday bad, added to other attraction?, an idea afforded of what 2ifemust.be like when in n town uuder artillery fire. Shrapnel shell fell in both Brown's Bay and Boss Bay, and those spending a few days at the former place were not pleased at the novelty. Those who came back to town this morning from Brown’s Bay brought with thorn several shells, and one boy had gathered on the teach about 400 of little round bullets cast j abroad by exploding shrapnel. The s.s, Orewa, when going into Brown’s Bay on Saturday afternoon, blew her whistle re- I peatedly to let tbo firers know that it was I on a peaceful mission. As the little boat I went out frem Brown’s Bay a shell ex I ploded, bat net near enough to do nay I damage. A battery of artillery, under Captain Bosworth, was practising beyond Castor Oil Bay, and wo understand that tbo custom is for the permanent force to I pat up targets, and also to have out daugor partiep, whose duty it is to signal to "coase I firing ”if the ocoasion arises. Evidently the shells went further than was antici- I paled, and no doubt the dangor parties considered it quite safe so long as they were going right over the cliff into tbo sea. The battery was using an automatic range finder.
