LANDS AND SURVEY.
MAKING TWO DEPARTMENTS. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. 1 [There is a that it is the intention of the Government to separate the Departments of Lands and Survey, and to establish two distinct departments, one devoted to surveys and the other to the disposal and management of Crown lands. An opportunity is Baid to be provided for the change by the prospective retirement of Mr J. A. Merchant, Surveyor-General, who at present is head of the combined departments of Lands and Survey. At aay rate the department seems to fce getting unwieldy. The staff has beeo growing of recent years and thore seems now to be great difficulty in finding elbow room for them all in the Customs building. In paßt times two rooms in this 1 building were kept sacred for visiting I Ministers, but these rooms are now occu-. I pied'by the officials of the Department, who have'got to bundle up their papers and look for a quiet corner while Ministers are in the neighbourhood. '
