IN AUCKLAND.
“■ (Per Press Association.) • Auckland, last nighty ;| An Austrian hoarding house at the cornor of Swanaon street and Mills Lane, occupied by Mr Nicholas Green, was practically destroyed by fire at about- midnight on Sunday. A man named Douglas. Strangemao, who was sleeping on the ground floor, was awakened by the crackling of flames in the next room. Ho waj opening a window when the police arrivyS-, and was assisted out with his effects. .He lost £7 which was in his trousers pocket. Mr Green was absent at the time, and the only other occupant of the house waslwhis sod, who slept in the rear of the building, and who was awakened by the barking of daßs in the back yard. He immediately rushed out into the street, having no jjme to dress. The brigade soon arrived on the ecene, and succeeded in Eubduing the flames, but not before the building had been completely gutted. A few articles of furnituro were got out, but the loss /*' practically a total one. The owned by the estate of-the late Hon.-? SwansOD, and, as far as can be aseertj* was not insured. The ,<Wacovered by a policy of £IOO in the Liverpool London and Globe office. There is nothing to account for the origin of the fire.
