Tho, Wairoa Guardian fully realises tlio importance of 'telephone facilities throughout the district, and keeps on pressing the subject upon tlvo att-eu-of tho people. There arc (states the Guardian) lateen miles of telephone wire needed to connect Wharerata with Opoutama, and if all the post offices in tho district were made into bureaux* and bureau hours wero granted at Op.outaona, the whole county, would bo connected with Gisborne. including Waipiro, anil Waiapit County. Then if a telephon* exchange wero established in town, people ‘would he able to communicate either way, during business hours. At present a telegram from Morero for Gisborne has to be sent to Wairoa,- then from there to Napier,, and tlionee on to Gisborne. By constructing this length of fifteen miles, others would bo able to connect arid Mangaone. Tarewa, Nub aka, MaruMartt, and Frascrlown would feed into the main line, and the 'Government interests would be enhanced wliilo business would he increased because it would -be expedited. The Wairoa journal then points to the •great use that is made of the telephone along the East Coast. and suggests that Wairoa should make a beginning with a town exchange. It is a subject that should be followed up with enthusiasm by, the Wairoa people*

S. Williams and Pcnoi Hohi’s stations. This morning he brings across another 3000, being from Mr T. S. Williams’ Matahiia station and from Mr Sherwood’s Makarika station.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning Philip Thornton Kenway was charged with driving a motor car at an oxcessivo paGO along Palmerston road on November 2nd, His Worship, Mr W. A. Barton, in delivering judgment, said that . he considered anything over 10 miles an • hour an oxcessivo speed and dangerous to the public. His Worship had to consider the safety of the public. If defendant continued to exceed a spoed of 10 miles he would have to ksc-p increasing the penalty until ho roaohod the maximum. Defondant was fined £2, costs 19s. At the Polico Court yesterday morning, Cbarlos A. Neild (Mr T. Alston Coleman) charged Frederick Hall (Mr Nolan) with issault. The informant stated that on the sth instant he went to got some information from defendant’s employees, and, whilo speaking to the manager of the plumbing department, he was grasped by defendant, dragged out of tho shop, and violently ejected on the footpath. Ho did not speak to defendant as he did not know he was there. It was bocauso of a dispute he had about some catling, and he went to the men who loaded the waggon as the men best likely to know. Evidence was also given by Arthur MurdeD, George Whitfield, M. Hickey aDd Kobert Strickland. Defendant gave evidence that ho saw informant go into his shop, and followed him in. Ho tapped him on the shoulder, aud said he had better get out of the shop or ho would put him out. Defendant told informant that ho had no right coming and interfering, with his men, and that if ho wanted to. know anything about his eccount he should come to the office. Wituess then walked out of tho 1 shop, and informant followed. There was . no violence. His Worship said he was satisfied that an assault had been committed. He did not think it was a serious . offence or one that called for a severe > penalty. He did not think he could dts miss the case under Section 15. _ A fine of < 5s was indicted, costs 13s, solicitors fee C *1 Is. J
