The increasing popularity ot th» game oi bowls Ims been fully evidenced by the ' keen interest and intense enthusiasm taken in the North Island tournament that has been proceeding at Gisborne this week. The proceedings yesterday give an idea of how disinclined a great commander was to relinquish his game oi

People forgot all about their dinners and remained on the green until close on seven o'clock last evening, witnessing the great mjatoh between Carlton and Gisborne for the championship. As each player stepped forward his play was keenly watched, and there was no stinting of applause whenever it was deserved, which was very frequent. But the climax was remarkable. Staid business were to ha HOT-vivtu bheit Jiftt s_i.n-tO the rious skip, shoulder-high and carrying him o,ff the rink. This enthusiasm proves not only what a hold the fascinating game obtains over the players’, hut how readily that enthusiatm is infused in the public. The victory in the championship of the North Island was certainly the greater; oh account o! the splendid game played by the Carlton team, who, though unsuccessful, deserve all praiso for the brilliance of their Play.
