MOTU NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

At Whakarau during the holidays the annual school picnic was held. There were a good number of settlors present and a must enjoyable day was spent. The committee are to be congratulated for the painstaking manner in which they provided for tho wants of the young folk. A special word of praise is due to Miss’Smith who was most energetic in her supervision of the many good things, also Mr F. Smith, who attended to the running events. The combined schools race was won bv Master J. Winter (Whakarau), with Master G- W. Richardson (Motu) a good second, The annual school picnic of the Rakaur roa school was held on tbe 2nd inst. The event was favored with glorious weather. A most successful dance was held in the evening. In and arour.d the Motu township Christmas and New Year days passed away quietly. Several private pionios were held.

Tbe next item of importance in tbe Motu is tbe annual sports meeting, which will be held in Mr Hanson’a paddock on Friday, January 27tb. The programme is an exceedingly good one, ami much in advanoe of former years, the sum of £2l being given in prizes. A strong committee is at work and patrons can rely on a really good day’s sport. The prize for tho Motu Cap bas been generously donated by Mr A. W. S. Kidd, who stipulates that the horses must be the bona fide property of settlers or others residing within twenty miles of the Motu township; patch weights, owners up. Before Mr W. Fisher, J.E., the members of the Motu rifle dub took the oath of allegiance on Saturday. The President, Mr P, Wright, and Captain Kidd were both present, A working b 6O was for Saturday to complete the range. A cricket team is going to Opotiki to play a matoh at show time.
