Speoial preparations have been made for this afternoon at the bowling green,and i) is expooted that there will be a large attendance of visitors. Captain Edwin wired at 11.83 yesterday morning :—“ Moderate to strong southerly winds ; glass rise slowly ; tides good ; sea easterly swell.” “The Common, Shelton and Co. orieket team have forfeited their match to Gisborne this afternoon ; Turanganui and Union play on No. 1 wicket. Cooper’s Imperial Biograph and Concert Co. will give a performance at Maknraka to morrow evening, and at the To Arai school on Saturday. The following players will represent the Union Cricket Club to-day in the match Turanganui v. Union:—Lang, Pitie, Sheridan (2), Priestly, Rice, Don, Torkington, Delaney, Andrews, Morgan; emergencies, Andrews,Tattersall and Murdoch. The following will represent Matawhero in their matoh against Waeronga-a-hika, to be played at Matawhero on' Saturday : —Smith, Lang, Baty, MoConnell, Reid, Aislabie, Morris, McKenzie, Murphy, Marriot, Robertson ; emergencies, Town, Copping, O’Donnell, Bell. Piay is to start at 2 o’clock sharp.
The Gisborne Tent of Rechabites held its fortnightly meeting last evening, Bro. T. A. Holdawortb, Chief Ruler, presiding. It was resolved to celebrate the anniversary of tho juvenile Tent in April next, and amongst other business transacted was the framing of a syllabus for the next half-year, a quoit matoh being Bet down for the next meeting.
The Ballance Reohabite Tent (juvenile) held its first meeting of the year last evening, when there was a large attendance of members. The proceedings throughout were very enthusiastic, and augur favorably for a successful year. The Tpnt is under the control of Bro. R. H. Clark, as Superintendent, and under his guidance the Tent should prosper throughout the ooming year.
At the residence of Mr M. McLeod, of Mangapapa, yesterday afternoon, Miss May Phillips, eldest daughter of Mr 3 McLeod, was united in the holy bands of matrimony to Mr Frank Brown ofDannevirke, the only bod of Mr Jameß Brown of Gisborne. Miss Phillips was attended by Misses Jessie Brown and Una MoLeod as bridesmaids, and Mr W. J. Cox acted as best man. The Bov. J. G. Paterson was the officiating clergyman. The young couple left for their future homo in Dannevirko by the Mokoia lust evening. A meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union wbb held yesterday, and a quantity of routine business was transacted. The firms of Dalgety and Co. and Common, Shelton and Co. wrote agreeing to the Executive’s letter re erection of a sheep dip at the saleyards, provided other auctioneers were agreeable. The Treasury wrote stating that tho Government had granted a loan of £3OO for Mill road, Paremata. The general secretary of the Union notified that the Colonial Executive would meet on January 19. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., Daniel Hughes, nightwatchman at tho Gisborne Sheepfarmera’ Frozen Meat Company's works, was oharged with having acted in the capacity of engine-driver in oharge of a stationary steam engine boiler without a proper certificate, being a steam stationary engine where a certificated driver is by law required. He pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr Stock. Detective Nixon stated that he visited the Haiti Freezing Works on October 21st,and in conversation with the defendant the latter said that he was acting in the capacity of nightwatchman up till midnight that night. Upon enquiries respecting his duties witness found that he had to keep up at least 501 b of steam on the boiler. Mr Stock contended that it must be shown that defendant was in charge of the boiler. They must not go upon an admission. Thoy must confine themselves to what was done on this particular night. Continuing, Detective Nixon said that defendant said he would not not have to touch the boiler that Digbt as the engines were working, and there was an engineer in oharge. Witness asked defendant if he had a certificate of any kind, and he said he had not. Defendant further explained that he had nothing whatever to do with the boilers when they were working. He was instructed not to allow the steam to go below 601 b. Sergt. Siddslls said that he would have to withdraw the oase and summons the whole of the offioers of the company. It was evident the summons had been made agaiflsi the wrong person. There was no doubt there had been a breaoh of the law, but he would admit that he had made a mistake in summonsing the defendant.
