BOWLING TOURNAMENT-! [Visitors jviho ano ;to .take park iji ■the No-rth Island Bowling Tournament arrive this morning from the South, while those from the North arrive tor-morrows An. howling circles it is of course a matter of .very, great importance that Gisborno has been selected as (the glace in which the tournament is to be held; and ,wc are sure that in the making of such an arrangement no cause for regret will be found among the bowling fraternity,, for the details are being attended to by men of considerable! experience in such matters; they can be relied on to, give clqse attention, ito [the work of having everything in as good .order as possible,. and in this they will have the enthusiastic support iof members and their friends, AVc take the opportunity of extending a hearty welcome toi all who. may, arrive from South and N,oEth„ and -ten express the hope .that the t.o.urnamcn't will be favored with good .weather,, which is all that is needed .to niako .the fixture a great success.. Bowling differs considerably from other: pastimes in that it brings together men of .busi; pursuits,, . most pf .whom have gob past the stage of the mpf a muscular forms pf. athletics. They arc usually-men .of mature judgment aud sound business knowledge, and ;aa the .visitors will represent, practically all parts .of the polony " their .visit becomes a matter; pf considerable public importance extending far beyond the pastime which is bring- . ing .them together. Their number Will include men competent to counsel and criticise in regard .to public affairs* and though, like other towns steadily, forging their way ahead W.e may, be sensitive to criticism and possibly careless in regard to advice, stall anything of tnah kind will no doubt be given and received in good part, We hope that much more lasting impressions will be gained than follow, from the excitement .of the moment as to which [team or representative obtains ithe victory, on the green. Naturally, pur desire is that the local representatives should be able to hold ithedr own against allcomers, But whether or. not they are successful in this respect the winners .will have our hearty congratulations, with .a qualification that some day we hope ithe local representatives will gain (the laurels an,tl by surpassing merit retain them. Many of those who, attend Will possibly not have previously favored Gisborne with a visit;’ some will renew old acquailQtaiicefckip, under, wo hope, the happiest auspices. It is rather a matter for regret that they cannot all go further afield through our wide and fertile district, their attention bfsiing required for most of. their time on the green ; but still men. of business acumen Will be able' to form comparatively, sound judgments from what they, can see and learn during their stay. As far, as the town itself is concerned we hope that good progress will have been made towards attaining that great boon with which some of the .towns represented are blesse'd,—water and drainage. The players have omn heartiest good Wishes for a most enjoyable time, and that they, will carry, with them pleasantest recollections of .dear, pld Gisborne.
