A despatch from the Colonial Secretary of the Straights Settlements states that there is no employment for white men there, and they have no chanoe of doing anything. The naval authorities are advised that the third-class cruiser Prometheus, whioh replaces the Pyladeo on the Australian station, is expected in Sydney at the end oi March.
Tbe relief oommittee have issuecT'a'clroular appeal for funds. Tho" MAjfoe-of Wellington cabled to Mr Carruthers, deeply sympathising in connection with tbe disastrous fires, and asking if outside aid were needed. Mr Ca.rnthers, replying to the Mayor and Mr Seddon, said the fires had oeased and the damage was not so great as at 'first*' supposed, hoping local funds would be sufficient, and thanking for sympathy. 1 The Glebe oolliers are idle to-day. Zt is believed locally that the wheelors will ignore the Court’s decision.
