AUCKLAND NEWS

Per Press Association. Auckland, last night. The return of births, . marriages and deaths registered in the district of Auckland during the past yom shows a decd<d improvement in all three classes on the figures for the previous year. The number of births registered for 1904 was 2540, as against 2375 lor the year 1903. The number of deaths last year was less than that for 1903, being 1015, as uguinst 1190. In marriages there was an increase, the' numbers being 955, as compared with 898 for 1903. The year 1903 had also shown an increase in births and ajjdeoreate in deaths, as compared with 1902, for which tbo totals were. 2260 births and 1290 deaths. The marriages in 1902 numbered 946.

The Cnstoms duty collected at Auckland for the quarter ended December 31 totals £184,037, being n record for the port. There was u slight decrease in the December collection, but the other two months of the quarter gave big returns, and the total is £11.656 higher than the previous record, which'was attained in the last quarter ot 1903. Of tbo £184.037 collected during the quarter just closed, £7398 was preferential tariff and £176,639 general tariff. Tho total consolidated revenue collected at the Customs at Auckland during the quarter was £196,953, compared with £182,746 in. the last quarter of 1908, showing an increase of, £14,207. Tho gold duty collected under the head of local revenue showed a decrease' from ,£5984 to *£4927.

The thoroughbred sales were continued ' yesterday, when the Cambria Park Stud Company’s yearlings, brood mares, and stallions wore sold-in 32 lotß, realising 2443 guineas. Seven yearlings from Grlenlora Park brought- 545 guineas. Waiotahi shares, quoted at £lO on Christmas Eve, .sold to-day at £2O. Other Thames shares are moving in sympathy.
