CHESS TOURNAMENT.

Wellington, last night. The following games were played in the chess tournament in the fifth round:— Grierson v. Edwards, Queens’ Fianchetto: Edwards played his pawns with excellent judgment, and with a fine bishop move at the end of the game obtained a distinct advantage, finally scoring at the 52nd move. Forsyth v. Woodford, French defence : An even game for some time, hut Woodford leaving his king exposed was mated soon after. W. E. Mason v. John Mason, French defence : This is a stubbornly contested game, and has not been concluded. The' first-named holds the winning position. Davies v. Connell, irregular Ruy Lopez: Davies won a queen for a rook and a knight at the 50th move, and four moves later Connell resigned. Pleasants v. Miles, queen’s gambit declined : Pleasants won a queen for two pieceß at the Bth move, and scored the game at move 31. Sandford v. Brown, Danish gambit, led to an uninteresting game, and waß won by Sandford. Barnes v. Mackay, irregular Ruy Lopez ; The game is unfinished. Barnes appears to have the upper hand Adair v. Friberg, French defence : Friberg, in sacrificing a bishop for a pawn, to get an attack, got into difficulties, and Adair won with his 50th move. In the sixth round, Forsyth v. Adair, the former got an early advantage, but overlooking a possible danger was mated on Adair's 17th move. This was the shortest game of the tournament.-J. Mason v. Sandford, Staunton opening: This game is unfinished. Mason will probably win. Connell v. Mackay, Scotch game: This is also unfinished. The positions appear ■ even. Woodford v. Plea3aots, French defence : This is another unfinished game. Pleasants has a distinct advantage. Edwards v. Miles is also unfinished. The position is even, Miles having two rooks, a bishop, and six pawns against a rook, knight, and five pawns. Grierson v, Friberg: This was finely played Ruy Lopez. At the end Grierson had his pawns sweeping down on both wings, and being bound to obtain the queen. Friberg resigned at move 39. Barnes v. W. E. Mason, queen’s gambit declined ; Tho game is unfinished. Mason has a pawn to the good, Brown v. Davies, Ruy Lopez : A diaputo as to whether or not one of the players touched a piece, which on reconsideration he did not wish to move, interrupted this game. The Committee will consider the matter. Adair is leading in the tourney with five wins and one loss.
