CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING,
(Per Press Association.) Napier, yesterday. Beautiful weather continues for the tonnis tournament. The results of the morning’s play in the championship games were as follows : Men’s Champion Singles, third round : W. Gow beat R. O. Kirk, 6—4, 6—3, 6—4.
Ladies’ Championship Singles, third lound: Mrs Payne beat Miss Fitzßoy, 6—l, 7-9, 6—l. Ladies’ Championship Doubles: Mrs Marcbbanks and Miss Gore beat Mrs Pearce and Miss Powdrell, 6—2, 6—3. Napier, Just night.
The Now Zealand lawn tenuis championship meeting was continued to-day. Some really fine play was witnessed, I several of tho games being well contested. In tho men’s championship singlos Goss won in the third round, and Peacock and Parker in the fourth, leaving the two lastnamed to play off tho final to-morrow. Considerable interest centrtd in the ladios’ championship singles, opinions being pretty equally divided between Mrs Puyne, aud Misses Gore and Powdrell as to who was likely to bo soon in tho final with Miss Nurmolly. Mrs Puyno won her game iu tho third round, but suffered defeat by Miss Gore iu the fourth round, and Miss Nuuneily beat Miss Powdrell, so that Miss Nunnelly and Miss Gore will play tho final.
In tho men's championship doubles Druco and Slornau won in the second round, aud Cox and Gore in the third round.
In tho ladies’ championship doubles Mrs Marchbunks ami Miss Guro und the Missos Uorne won iu tho ihird round, the last-uuuud pair creating some surpiise Oy beating Misses Nunnelly and Harman, Iu the conjoined championship doubles Cox aud Mrs Bayne, Fenwick and Mrs Maunoiing won the second round, (ioas and Mrs Badamyuo, Fenwick and Mrs Mauuering, Parker aud Miss Nunnelly, und Adams and Miss Powdrell aie in tho hnal round.
Iu the men’s handicap singles, first grade, Laishley, Fenwick, Beere, and Kirk won in tho second round, and Fenwick and Tyser in the third round. Men’s handicap Hughs, second grade : Broad, Swainsou, Tomoaua, aud Coates won iu tho third round, and Swainson and Coates in the fourth round.
Ladies’ handicap singles ; Mrs Manneriug and Miss Cottrell won in the first round ; Mrs Payue, Misses Nevill, Mowatt, Brathwaite, Comerill, and Wellwood in the second round ; and Mrs Payne, Misses Ward, Wellwood, Brathwaite, Neville, Gordo, Fitzßoy, and B. Hindinarsh iu the third round.
Mcn’.s handicap doubles: Fenwick and Logan, Tipping aud C. Margoliouth, Kennedy and Broad, Vaile and Brown, Tyser and Bradley won iu the second round ; Margoliouth and Tipping, L. Margoliouth and Von Daaelszen, and Kennedy and Broad in the third round.
Ladies’ Handicap Duublcs : Missos Cotterill and Heath, Rutherfurd and Dalzeil, Mrs Westall and Miss Neville, Missos Todd and Fannin, Mowatt and Smith won in the second round, aud Misses Cotterill and Heath, and Hindmarsh (2) in tho third round.
Combiued Handicap Doubles: Beere and Miss Batham, Gold-Smith and Miss Neville, Cooke and Mrs Westall, Hunter and Bliss Heath, Johnston and Miss FitzRoy, C. Margoliouth and Miss Berkeley won in the second round ; Mr and Mrs Mannering, Tipping and Miss R- Wellwood, Redward and Miss Robinson, GoldSmith and Mies Neville, and Parker and Miss Dalzoll won in the third round. All the finals will be played to-morrow.
