The Emperor Franz Josef of 'Austria began his long reign when he was only 18, and it may be doubled whether any modern Sovereign ever had a life so fearfully overshadowed 'by tragedy as has that calm and be-: mgnant-looking old man. lie was still in the full flush of manhood when lie lost so tragically his adored brother, the Emperor Maximilian of Mexico ; very shortly after came his own disastrous conflict with Germanv ; then came the awful suicide of his only son ; and, last ‘blow of all, tiic assassination of his beautiful wayward Empress at Geneva.; Ihe head of the House of Hapsburg is, however, peculiarly blessed in his Qaughtcrs; with the youngest of these, the Princess Valerie, he spends a good deal of time, and he is a devoted grandfather to her charming croup of children.
