A case of considerable interest to road contractors has just been heard at Marulan, New South Wales. A landowner proceeded against a road contractor for enteiing his enclosed land and removing gravel. Mr Thomas, fof ■defendant, took the point that Act 4, William IV., gave road contractors the right to remove material for repairing roads. While other sections of the Act had hern repealed, the sceeion giving this right had not been so dealt with. The police magistrate upheld the point, and dismissed the case, with treble costs against complainant, as provided by the Act. The Auckland police are making in quiries respecting a newly-born baby boy, not above one day old, found by a postman in the front garden of a bouse in Collingwood street, Ponsonby. It was lying near the gate. The baby was wrapped first in an old flanelette petticoat, and, as an outer covering, a much-worn shawl. The postman took the child, a healthy boy, who is quite likely to survive the exposure and want of attention to which it has been subjected, to Dr Inglis. Subsequently the infant was handed over to the police matron, and the Charitable Aid Board was communicated with, the result beiDg that the Board took charge of the child.
