SWEEPS.

(To the Editor of the Times.)

Sir,—Your journal is to be commended for your recent advocacy of 'the legalising of the above. I have .watched for some considerable time ihe leading papers of New Zealand, hut -not one of them has “ dared to he a Daniel.” Many people of- this colony would hail the legalising of sweeps as a valuable concession. Surely, as you justly say, if the totalisaior, art unions, etc., are permissible, why, in all fairness, should the general public he debarred or prohibited front having a chance to Iry their luck in a sweep, properly safeguarded of course, and thus keep thousands of pounds in the colony ? —I am, etc., FAIR PLAY.
