A NASTY, ACCIDENT

CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The New Zealand Wheel Race Meeting attracted' a record crowd to Lancaster Lark to-day, the presence of Major Taylor (the world’s champion) being responsible for a Jot of interest. The following are the results of the principal races New Zealand Wheel race, 2 miles ( of £SO, £2O, and £5 : R. Arnst, oi Ashburton, 110 yards, I ; J. R. Campion, Wanganui, 250 yards, 2 ; W. Connell, the other hack marker, also gave up at an early stage. A fine pursuit race took place betweeu the limit

and middle divisions. The latter, comprising J. Arnst, R. Arnst, and Barrow, caught the leaders a lap and a half from home, but the pace still l'cpt fast. Entering the last round, Campion led, hut at the quarternijle mark he was challenged by J. Arnst, who was followed by R. Arnst and Barrow. Three hundred yards from home, R. Arnst came with a most determined effort, and ie; -ing the field, he won comfortably by 30 yards from Campion, who was two lengths in front of S. Scott, J. Arnst being four lengths away fourth The time was 4 min. 20 sec. Major Taylor started in the first heat, and began well, riding the first Jap in record time; but at the end of a lap and a half he retired, finding the task hopeless. Mitchell, Porter, 50 sec., 2 ; W. Williamson’s 2h.p, Mitchell, jC. .Lewis, 65 sec., 3. The officials of the Christchurch Cycling Club met after the Wheel race to-day, and disqualified A. Huston for the rest of the meeting for foul riding in the first heat. He started off the 70 yards mark, and aHer Sutherland (scr) caught R. Connell (40 yards) Huston appeared to drop back and waif for Major Taylor. As Taylor caught him lie slackened pace perceptibly, and then the officials deemed him guilty ‘of foul riding, “in endeavoring to' slow down the field.”

In the preliminary to the motor cycle race, S. Dumcrgue, riding Geo. Sutherland’s 3A horse power motor, met with a nasty accident. • Ijj rounding .the south-east lie got? on too much speed, and ran into a 1 fence. He was heavily thrown, and badly shaken, but recovered consciousness in ten minutes. The motor .was completely wrecked.
