LATE NEW ZEALAND.
Per Press Association, Wellington, last night. The City Council held a special meeting to-night to consider the position of affairs in regard to the difficulty which has arisen in connection with wood-paving and tram way construction along Kent Terrace, where through an error in engineering the work has been brought to a standstill. It was decided to undertake certain necessary work, and to placo the city engineer, Mr Rounthwaite, under suspension pending the decision of the full Council on Thursday.
Napier, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club have altered the dates of their summer meeting to Ist and 2nd January, instead of 81st December and Ist January as originally arranged.
Auckland, last night. A banquet to Mr Massey, Leader of the Opposition, was held to-night. There was a large and influential gathering, including Sir Wm. Russell, and a number of members of Parliament. Complimentary speeches were made, and Mr Massey replied, dealing with the work of last session and other matters, defending the action of the Opposition.
