' A Native named Marewa died at the Hospital on Saturday from blood-poison-ing, resulting from injuries received whilst shearing. He had been in the Hospital for 11 days. A miner named John Robinson was killed while at work in the Stockton pit, Newcastle, New South Wales, through being jammed by a skip. During a recent thunderstorm a gale of wind overturned a coach near Warooka, South Australia, pinning tho driver under the coach. He was not seriously injured.
Wood blocking is now being carried out on an extensive scale in the streets of Wellington. Over a million feet of jarrah timber has been sawn into blocks for the purpose.
Mr W. B. Hingston has been appointed inspector, under the Noxious Weeds Act, for the Poverty Bay and Wairoa districts. We would like to see our girls possessed of more than a crude knowledge, and this desideratum may easily be accomplished by the introduction of cookery classes into the ordinary curriculum of our public schools.—Thames Star. Two very valuable Manx eats, selected by Mr Harrison Weir, tbe celebrated animal painter, for Mr J. Wilson Davidson , of Wellington, are on board the steamer Whakatauo, due about the end of the month. The male is seven months old, and the femolo 16 months old. Both animals are prize-winners at Crystal Palace shows. The Gisborne Riflos went into camp yesterday afternoon for their customary year’s end week’s training, and will be instructed by Stall Sergeant-Major Winter. Captain Warren will bo in charge, and the orderly officers of the day will be Lieutenant Lewis, Sergeant Wakelin, and Corporal Scott. The Rifles Band will be in attendance during the week, and on Thursday a concert will be held. An old age pensioner, named Edward Brown, has just died at the Corowa Hospital, New South Wales. He was supposed to be poverty-stricken, but an examination of the hut from which he was removed 10 days previously led to the discovery of a hoard of 242 sovereigns in an old tin, planted under a bed. On Saturday last an old resident of Gisborne died in the person of Mr Harry Cannon, who for the last 30 years had been a resident of this district. Mr Cannon was a native of London, and was 63 years of age. He came to Now Zealand in 1874, and was licensee of the Tolago Bay Hotel for seven years, and afterwards of the Royal Hotel, Gisborne, for nine years. The deceased leaves a grown-up family of two sons and two daughters.
It ia whispered that the Government sale of the Bickerstaffe estate, the Colbeck property on the Kaipara acquired by the Government at J 63 10 per acre, was a fiasco. Only some half-dozen sections were applied for, out of 12,000 offered, and there was no eagerness shown about these. Several reasons are urged on account of this failure. One is that the price is too high, though farming land is selling in other districts at comparatively much higher prices. Another is that the land is unsuitable, which is a much more probable roason.—Observer.

At the adjourned moating of creditors in the estate of John McConnochio, builder, bold yesterday afternoon, Mr Lysnar said dectpr was prepared to defend himself if tbo creditor were determined to take action against him. Mr McConnoehie had told them beforo that ho was willing to pay what he could, and he was now prepared to pay at least 5s in the £ within 12 months were hjs discharge not opposed. It had been pointed out to debtor that if the creditors opposed his discharge it would affect fais business, and ho did Dot wish to be put to any loss in that way. Mr Stafford said Mr McConnoehie bad been firm before that he could not make any offer. Mr Lysnar: No cash offer, The Assignee thought the opinion of his solicitor as to whether debtor had rendered him£3lf liable undor the penal clauses of the Act .should be laid beforo the creditors first. Mr Lysnar pointed out that by making this opinion p.ublio it would be injurious to debtor in his business. At the suggestion of the Assignee it was decided to adjourn the meeting to give , oreditors an opportunity to coosider debtor’s offer)
