UNITED V*. MATAWHERO

On Saturday last the United Club sect a fceam out) to play the newly formed Mntawhero Club on the latter’s ground. Tbo clay was beautifully fine, and the journey out proved most enjoyable. Tho Matawhoro Club have a nice ground near the Royal Oak Hotel, with a matting wicket. Tho length of tho grass prevented the ball from travelling in tbo outfield, though otherwise tho ground and pitch wero in good order.' United batted first and totalled 88, Hodge, Dodd, W. Gibson, and Iveson doing most of tho run-getting. Dodd, tho United captain, played a good innings. Baty, Town, and McConnell shared bowling honors. The Matawheio innings started well, A. Baty (the old Arai player) and McConnell putting on 22 for the first against tho bowling of Gardiner and Neale, both of whom took some lime to settle down to a length, After the first wicket foil no furthor resistance was offered, and the remainder of the side wero rapidly disposed of, the total, which promised so well, only realising 84. Nealo was especially destructive, Baty hatted freely and well for his 18. In this innings Hill brought off two sensational one-hand catches at mid-on, which wero quite Braund-like. It was agreed that Matawbero should go in again, and they totallod 38 in their second venture, Baty again playing a good innings. United thus won by an innings and 12 runs. The Matawhero Club have a _ likelylooking lot of young fellows in their team who shape promisingly at tho wickets and in the Hold, and only WRnt to play a match or two together to acquire the confidence they now lack. Tho ladies of Matawhero provided most fragrant afternoon tea and an abundance of eatables for the players and spectators —an attention which was very highly appreciated by everyone.
