After one over Rhodes came on in place of Bosauquet. Rhodes at this point had secured no wickets at a cost of 31 runs. His third ball was to Laver. The batsman swung round on it. Lilley took it and appealed for a catch. Afto* a momentarily delay tho appeal was allowed. ’
Eight for 263. Kelly partnered Noble, and wont in to force the score. lle quickly hit up 10. Noble added a single, aud then got Arnold round hard to leg just abovo Foster’s head. The latter put up his hand and effected a neat cateh. Nine for 271.
The local skipper had boon at tho wickets 4 hours 40 miuutes, and hit off sixteen tourers. His innings was a brilliant one, aud ho only gavo ouo hard chance. Sauuders, tho last man, emulated Kelly, and vigorously knocked up 11. Kelly put one through the slips so low that Braund’s cateh seemed doubtful, and caused the crowd to hoot when the catch was allowed. The scores wore : AUSTRALIA—Ist Innings. Saunders and Laver started the bowling. Warner made a whack at Lavor’s third ball, Kolly smartly catching it. Ono for nil.
Tyldesley joined Hayward and bocamo aggressive from the jump, hitting both bowlers repeatedly to tho boundary, totting up 33 in 23 minutes. With the score at 37 tho Victorian bowlers gave way to Noble and Howell. Tyldesley continued free oricket, but Hayward played forward to Howell, who beat hiu} ; . Two for 49. Arnold joined Tyldesley, and played to lunch.
On resuming Tyldesley soon had half a century to his credit. Ho occupied 64 minutes, displaying fine driving. He added throo more, and thon Noblo clean bowled him. Threo for 73. Noblo secured one wicket for 12.
Arnold and Foster batted steadily, playing Sounders cautiously but punishing Laver, who relieved Noblo at 87. At 96 Howell took the place of Saunders. Tho century was recorded for 95 minutos’ play. Tho game now became painfully slow, Laver bowling a fine length and the fielding being splendid. At 113 Armstrong came on instead of Howell, and with the second ball of the third over dissolved what looked like developing into a settled partnership. Arnold put one into Lavor’s hands at short leg—a beautiful catch Four for 117.
Brauud partnered Foster, and the score crept up very Blowly, chiefly singles, Armstrong and Laver bowling splendidly. The bulk of the work was loft to Foster, who occupied 100 minutes in compiling 43. Noble and Saunders took charge of tho bowling at 160. Whon Foster was 51 ho gave a chance to Gregory, who dropped it. Braund livened up considerably, driving vigorously fourers in quick succession. At 193 Howell and Trumper were tried. After passing his half century Foster played with greater freedom. The second hundred was registered for 3 hours 17 minutes’ play. Despite various changes of bowling tho partnership became well eatablished, and thero was a fine display of sound cricket. Braund reached kiS half century in an hour and 52 minutes. Then he sot out to overhaul the scorei when stumps wore drawn. Thero were 35,000 people present. England in their first innnings have lost four wickets for 243.
