SUNDAY CONCERTS.

'(To the Editor of the Times.)

Sir, —After attending the sacred concert given by the Gisborno Rifles Band this evening, I should with your kind permission like to say a few words in connection therewith. In the first place one cannot but take strong exception to the conduct of a section of the audience in applauding in the manner they did, and especially in following it up with stamping of feet and whistling. A sacred concert given on a Sunday evening, and attended chiefly by church people, is hardly the place for such an unseemly display as was witnessed this evening. Then exception might fairly bo taken to a number of the songs given which were in no way suited to the occasion. If a concert be given on a Sunday evening it should consist of sacred music only, and the audience might fairly well be expected to refrain from demanding encores.—l am, &c., Churchman.
