At tho wool sales activity in demand continues. Fine short crossbreds and scoured ore Bteady. Greasy sold up to 13d, scoured 19d. Melbourne, Dec. 10. At the wool sales competition is keen, and prices are well maintained. (Per Press Association.) Napier, last night. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company cables: —“ Frozen meat market: A further fall of 18d in mutton and lamb. Quotations: Canterbury, 3, 7 (d ; Napier, Wellington, and North Island, 3 3-8 d; lamb, first quality 4Jd> second 4 3 8d; beef, hinds fores 2 3 Bd.”
Christchurch, last night. At tho second wool sale of the season, held yesterday, 12,609 bales were catalogued, and there was a large attendance of buyers. Only a few station clips were offered, the bulk being farmers’ lots, and the wool was in excellent condition. There were a number of complaints from brokers of non-delivery of wool by tho Railway Department. Thero was good competition from the woollen mills for Merinos and fine haif-breds, but compared with the previous sale inferior half-bred and coarse crossbreds were easier. Fellmongers’ lots Bold well. Over half the wool, including the bulk of crossbred wool, waß passed in, in consequence of reserves being beyond buyers’ limits. The range of prices during the forenoon was : Merino B|d to 10£d, super half bred 9d and 9}d, inferior and medium 6d to Bj(d, super crossbreds 6Jd and 9d, inferior and medium 5d to 6jd, longwool s£d and 6Jd, Down wool 6.}d and 8)d, Merino pieces 7£d and 8)d, ' haifbred pieces s)d to 7d, crossbred pieces 4d and s£d, locks 5d to s|d.
YESTERDAY’S SALES.
There was a large attendance at the Matawhero saloyards yesterday, when Messrs Williams and Kettle and the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., hold their U9uai stock salos.
Shoep : About 5000 were yarded, mostly wethers. Tne bidding for this line was brisk, aud competition brisk throughout. Butchers availed themselves of the opportunity of proouriug a good Btock of fat mutton, which the sheep sold yesterday promised to make. All the pens were sold under the hammer, proving that this kind of sheep was in great demand. The following are the prices :—Shorn two-tooth wethers from tho coast 11s 3d to 11s 9d (3000 of this line were disposed of at the above prices), forward four-tooth shorn wethers 13s to 13s 3d, fat do up to 13s Bd, fat woully wethers up to 18s Id.
Cattle: Between 400 and 500 were yarded, including 80 head of two to thrde year old steers Irom Waiparo station and 33 head of Boiled Augus steers from the same place. Four pure-bred Shorthorn bulls were passed, as bidding did not come up to the mark. The demand for boef, however, was not equal to that for mutton, and competition was not so keen. Prices ruled as follows : —2 to 2£ year old steers £5 12s 6d (40 sold at that price),: 2£ to 3 year old steers £6 15s, 2to year old Polled Angus steors £5 17s fid, fat bullocks j£B 2s fid, three 3-year-old Polled ADgus Bteers £6 17s fid, cows with calves at foot from £5 2s fid, dry cows £4 17s 6d, mixed heifers 113 19s to £4 4s, forward steers £4 ss, calves from 355. Pigs : There was only a small entry, all selling at Bs.
