TIMARU ABATTOIRS

(Per Press Association.) TIMARU, last night. The Timaru municipal abattoirs were formally opened this afternoon, a bullock being killed in the presence of the Mayor, Councillors, three exMayors, and a company of about a hundred. The building is said to ho the best of the kind in the- colony, and is large enough for three times the present population of Timaru. ■The building cost over £IOOO, and nas 32 acres of land attached which cost £l5O0 a The site is an excellent one, being open to the sea breeze, and the facilities for drainage inti: the sea are unsurpassable. The Council were fortunate in obtaining a lean from the Government at 3£ per cent., including a sinking fund covering 44 years. The work is to be done by contract. It will not be- : gin until after the'New Year, as-the road arid paddock fencing is not yst completed*
