SIR JOSEPH WARD..
.(Per Press Association.) AUOKLAND, last night. Sir Joseph Ward arrived to-day. He was met by, a considerable number of citizens and others, including the Mayor. He attends the Veterans’ Home to-morrow, and the following day opens the Sanatorium at .Cambridge, lie possibly, goes .to Rotorua. Sir Joseph Ward states that four Superintendents of the Advances to Settlers Department are to be dispensed with, being found to be not •necessary,

The Auckland Methodist Synod opened in ministerial session yesterday., the Rev,, C B H. Garland presiding, The Rev* G. S. Smalley was recommended as a supernumerary, ,The Rev a J. T s Pinfold was granted permission to visit England next year, and the Conference was recommended to grant a supply for his circuit. The Revs, W, Greenslade and I-lapeta Renata were feepmmended to the Conference as candidates for ordination. No candidates for the ministry were recommended. The Revs. T. T, Thomas, 8.A., and J. Belton were recommended to pass in their years. Hone Harris, a Maori probationer, was favorably reported cm- Student Mcßean was recommended to he Received as a probationer, all the other students to remain in college for further training.
HIS EXCELLENCY. His Excellency, the Governor returned from Rotorua this evening. To-morrow he opens the Veterans’ Home at Three Kings, near One"hunga, and next week he will be present at five days' bazaar in aid of the Veterans’ Home. Lord Northland, who arrived here .50me days ago, will also remain 'for the bazpar. Tnc Governor remains here until the end of the year.
ST. LOUIS Commissioner-General Green, who s commencing a tour of the colony on behalf of the United States Go'-, ernment, in the interests of the St. Louis Exposition, addressed meetings merchants and others under the auspieps pf the Chamber oi Commerce . to-day. ‘ He explained the principal features of the ‘Exposition, and emphasised the benefits to be derived by representation at such a monster gathering of all nations Commissioner-General Green will confer with Sir Joseph Ward tomorrow on the subject of the Government taking steps to be represented at the Exposition^
