BRITAIN’S WORK

The tribute paid to Britain’s work in the .Transvaal by an Austrian residing there should give much satisfaction to Britishers, not that we are. in need of the praise of others, or care very much for their opinions —but it is pleasing to get such testimony from a source that is- unlikely to be unduly biassed towards tire Britishers. The tribute can at least be used as a sort of set-oil to the querulous behavior of those who believe themselves to be British at heart, hut whose actions rather tend to ptove disloyalty of an aggravated kind that would be sharply dealt with in any other country. Any future trouble in the Transvaal is not likely to be with those who fought against us recently ; but with the financial, sharks w ho, • now that the Boers have been brought under British rule, are eager to introduce any plague connected witli cheap labor, .that will enable them to increase their profits. White men were required to fight the Boers, but now all that is over, tire capitalists are "desirous of displacing the white men •by others of less independence, and who will work for cheaper wages. It

is almost amusing to read between the linfijuof the pathetic messages 'from' South Africa as to the scarcity of labor, while everyone who has gi l ven tlie least attention to the matter must know that most of these assertions are lies uttered with the deliberate purpose of misleading the* British public, which always means Well, and would not, if properly informed, caslT South Africa over to /orcign financial magnates and their cheap labor importations.
