TOLAGO BAY FERRY.
MR GOODLEY’S TENDER ACCEPTED.
At the meeting of tho Cools County Council yesterday, three tenders were received for the right to collect tolls on the Tolago Bay ferry, across the Uawa river. The tonders were as follows John Maddocls £lls, J. Goodloy £l6O, George Hale £176. Accompanied with Mr Goodley’s tender was a letter stating that he had conducted tho ferry for two years, and there had not been a single complaint. He hoped that this fact would be taken into consideration by the Council in arriving at a decision. Cr Murphy thought .that Mr Goodley’s ender, although it was not the lowest, hould be accepted. The Council could ely upon him discharging the duties satisfactorily. Cr While : The matter of £lO or so should not prevent us from giving 'it to a man who has served us well. Cr Clayton :He seems to have given universal satisfaction. The only thing is that in not accepting the highest tender for the ferry we may he establishing a precedent which will- he made use of on some Other occasion.
Cr Harcling : The work has been dona satisfactorily by Mr Goodlay for a number of years. I think we should give it to him again. Cr Shcrratt : It will bo an inducement to get it done well. On tho motion of Cr Murphy, Mr Goodley’s tender of £l6O was accepted. “ I do not think that we have done quite right,” remarked the Chairman in putting the motion. “ Here is a offer of £l6 per year more, and tho sureties are good men.”
