Tho schooner yacht La Carbine, about 70 tons, built for Sir Rupert Clarke, of Melbourne, was launched at the yards of Mr C. Bailey this morning. Sir Rupert and nis brother Ernest were present. In the Supreme Court, Judge Edwards sentenced Edward Kegan to three years for indecent assault on his daughter, aged 10. NAPIER, last night.
A five-roomed dwelling in Hastings istreet, owned by W< Boden, and occupied by George Burns, ,waa destroyed by fire, owing to a kerosene lamp bursting. Practically nothing was saved. The insurance on the house was £2OO in the United, and on the furniture £25 in the South British.
WELLINGTON, last night,
John Dome, who some days ago escaped from custody at the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, while awaiting trial, and up to the present evaded recapture, was arrested at Ekctahuna on a charge of the theft of jewellery from a hotel there. The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened to-day before Judge Cooper, who remarked on the lengthy calendar, and said that in all the cases there was a prima facie case made out, and they should all go before a common jury. CHRISTCHURCH, last night.
Alfred Brooks and his wife Agnes were indicted at the Supreme Court this morning on a charge of wilfully neglecting a child of 31 years. The child had been" adopted for £2O. It was suffering from a syphilitic disorder on August 17th: When the child was taken from Brooks’ house at New Brighton, it was found to be .suffering from cuts on the head, sores and rashes from the hips to the heels, and swellings on different .parts of the* body. The case is proceeding.
DUNEDIN, last night.
In the gaming cases, the Judge told the Grand Jpry, that there was prima facie evidence that the business of betting was carried on by accused. The fact that other business was carried on by them was immeterial.
A hod y found on the beach ‘-at Rae’s Junction yesterday is believed to be that of Andrew Taylor, drownoff the Miller’s Flat dredge on the 3rd instant. True bills were returned in each indictment at the Supreme . Court Willianx, Burn Storey, alias Charles Stuart, for indecent assault on a child under 16, was found guilty, and sentence was deferred.
WESTPORT, last night
Anthony Mclntyre, aged 12, Was drowned at Waimangaroa yesterday* whilst bathing.
O. 11. Patz, aged 69, dropped dead in a paddock at Mokihinui,- of heart disease.
