MATCH AGAINST NEW SOUTH WALES. ENGLISHMEN 211 AHEAD ON FIRST INNINGS.

Braund and Tyldesley rosumod to Mcßeth and Noble. Tho latter, in tho second over, bowled Tyldesley, who played careful, sound cricket for 80. Hirst followed, and began by hitting a couplo of boundaries. On tho other hand Braund was acting strictly on tho defensive, the formor goitiug into double figures while his partner was stationary. The Yorksbireman rapidly hit up 20, pulling Noblo’s off stuff splendidly. The second century appeared by Braund adding a single amidst cheers, he having been batting fifty minutes for a couple of runs. The fielding was exceptionally good, S. Gregory and Noble being specially noticeable. , At 209 Hopkins rolieved Noblo and Howell went on at Mcßeth’s end, but at 234 Fisher displaced Howoil. The scoring then eased down somewhat. Hirst reached his half-century. Then Noblo went on again, replacing Hopkins, and Mcßeth took the ball from Fisher. Aftor tho luncheon adjournment Braund maintained his stonewalling tactics, but Hirst, in playing forward to Howoil, lost his wicket. He played a fine, free innings, during which ho hit a dozen fours. Fivo for 265. Bosanquet followod, but after scoring eight Howoil brilliantly caught him in tho slips. Six for 276. Lilley had brief play, Noble cloan bowling him when tho board showed 280. Arnold was next, and runs came slowly. Braund noxt tried to put one through the . slips, when Trumpor made a fine catch, falling in the effort, which caused Braund’s retirement. Eight for 297. Braund had displayed dogged defence, and was at the wickot two and a half hours. Relf was in lime to see Arnold, who had scored 14, lift one of Hopkins' high to Duff, Nine for 819. Rhodes was the last man, but bofore ho scored Keif played Mcßeth on, and tho innings closed for 319, or 211 ahead of thoir opponents. The following are the scores ENGLISHMEN—Ist Innings.

Trumper just made cloven when ho swung round hard on one from Hirst. Braund, at mid-on, put up bis'hand and effected a marvellous catch. One for 12. • C. Gregory went in hex?. Duff began to force tho play, and 50 wero put up rapidly. This led to Bosanquet going on at Hirst’s end. Hirst had 31 knocked off him when Duff had scored 30. Bosanquet temptod him out, and but for Lilley fumbling tho ball ho must have stumped him. Gregory was getting runs by steady play. At 61 Rhodes relieved Arnold. Bosanquet was troubling the batsmen, but Rhodes was treated confidently. Duff, after a firio display, made a wretchod stroke off Bosanquet, and gave Lilley the safest of catches. Two for 83.
Sid Gregory followed, nud nearly repeated Duff's mistake with the first ball. C. Gregory treated Khodes freely, and made, some fine strokes, but soon lost his brother's partnership.. The latter, after scoring eight, spooning Bosanquet to Arnold at mid-oil. Three for 91. Hickson came next, and when the century had boon recorded Arnold relieved Rhodes, His first over was fatal to 0. Gregory, who lifted one to Warner at midon. Four for 101.
Howell was next, and raised wild enthusiasm by slamming Bosanquet into the shilling pavilion. Ho added another three to his total, and then lifted Arnold high in the direction of Rolf, who made a nice oatoh at tho boundary. Five for 114. Fisher, who filled the gap, was given out l.b.w. to Bosanquet’s second ball, and when stump 3 wore drawn the score stood at six wickets for 114. NEW SOUTH- WALES—2nd Innings.
