THE THAMES .COMET,
L (Per Press Association.) .THAMES, last night. Some months ago a new comet was discovered by Mr John Grigg, the Thames-astronomer. The comet ,was afterwards observed iii other places, and its path recorded and orbit calculated. Mr Grigg’s work bias been duly appreciated throughout the sc entitle world, and among many, congratulatory letters received was ■one from Professor Campbell, director of the Lick Observatory! announcing the award of the Donohoe Comet Medal by, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.- The medal lias just reached its destination, and shows on tiie obverse a comet with Mars in the background, surrounded by, a title, Astronomical Society of the Pacific.” On the Severs* is inscribed : “ This medal, founded by Goseph Donohoe, is presented to John Grigg, in commemoration ol the discovery of a comet.” A' FIERCE HAILSTORM, * WAIPAWA, last night.
'A remarkably violent hailstorm raged in Waustead district for three hours yesterday. Hailstones as large as eggs killed lambs and sheep, and ruined the crops. A girl jvas knocked senseless., .WANGANUI SHOW.
WANGANUI, last night. The total entries for the Wanganui Show constitute a record, and include :—Horses 109, cattle ,149 s sheep 248, : dogs 287, poultry and pigeons 532, pigs 48, mplements and vehicles 328, home industries and produce 693, exhibits in stalls 4005 ; total, 7001. •

r At the Magisterial enquiry into the wreck of the barque Ben Avon, the Court found that Captain Dixon acted carelessly, but as lie had .on Board a duly licensed and experienced pilot it was of opinion that the case would be met by ordering the master to pay the costs of the enquiry, £ls I Is. The certificates of the master and second officer were returned, ALLEGED SLY GROG-SELLING. CHRISTCHURCH, last night.
'A 1 case in which Joseph Millar, a hairdresser,- was charged with sly grog-selling, was dismissed to-day, after hearing the evidence of the prosecution,- which was to the effect 'that beer had been brought by a man named Kerr, who tendered in payment lialf-a-crown which had been marked by the detectives, and also the evidence of the defendant. Tin Magistrate said he did not believe
defendant’s evidence, which was a denial that he had sold the beer, but it would be unsafe to convict on the evidence of the prosecution. NORTH OTAGO A. AND P. SHOW. OAMARU, last night. The for tv-first Show of the North
