An alarming outbreak of scarlet fever lias occurred at Mount Morgan. The hospital is taxed to the uttermost, and the authorities are erecting temporary wards. MELBOURNE, Nov, 19.
■A corner has been worked in Transit Gold Mining Company shares by one operator. The prices quoted are J.jd buyer; £5 seller. All undelivered scrip is due. One huyor has shares outstanding. Instructions were given to buy in against the seller’s price, They thereuopn jumped to £5. Since tho corner ” became complete, considerable sums have been offered by a “ bear 11 for release, but tbe buyer demands £2750, being the price of over 550 shares overdue at £5.
The hide market is very firm for all descriptions, excepting kips.- The advance recorded last week has not been sustained. Calf-skins advanced one-eighth. The tallow market continues dull, values ruling low. Shipping enquiry is moderate. .1 1 co ivod 1.4 a.m., Nov. 20 London, Nov. 17.

At a banquet King Edward recalled the visit of the King of Sardinia in 1855, and dwelt on the cordial reception accorded to himself at Rome on tho occasion of his recent visit. He was confident London would reciprocate. Mr Ritchie, speaking at Thornton Heath, strongly resented Mr Chamberlain’s imputation that he bad sprung a surprise on the Cabinet on the eve of the Budget. Professor Hussey, of the Lick Observatory, who is conducting observations here, has discovered ten new double stars hitherto unknown in the astronomical world.
A number of jockeys at Corowa inserted an advertisement declaring that they would not participate in a local race meeting while the presont stewards and secretary held positions’. The jockeys were called before the stewards, who were disposed to meet the insult by a severe reprimand. The jockeys, however, maintained their attitude, with the result that eight were disqualified for periods ranging from six months to five years. Melbourne, Nov. 19. The V.R.C. cleared £6600 over the spring meeting, an increase of £IOOO over last Cnp meeting.
