A FIRE.
Per Press Association. Nelson, last night. Griffon and Sons’, Ltd., confectionery and biscuit factory was burnt down at 5 o’clock this morning, being totally destroyed. A largo number of poopio have been thrown out of employment. Tho insurances amount to about £9OOO, and the loss is considerably over that amount-.,
The insurance on Gritfin and Sons’ confectionery mill and biscuit factory are : Building, Northern Office £IOOO, Liverpool, London, and Globe £3000; stock, Guardian £2OOO, South British £I7OO, Sun £IOOO, United £300; machinery, Liverpool, London, and Globe £2200, Standard £300; traps, etc.', South British, £3OO ; total, £9IOO, Two dwellings damaged wore insured for £75 each in the Northern. The loss over insurance is about £IO,OOO. It is unknown how the fire originated. There will ho a considerable loss in customers' stock. Later.—lt has been decided to hold an enquiry to-morrow as tu the fire by which Griffin and Sons’ (Limited) 'biscuit and confectionery works were completely destroyed this morning, this decision being at the request.of tiie There do not “appear to be any suspicious circumstances, but there was a desire for an enquiry, owing to the magnitude of the fire. The insurances total £9,100, distributed as follows .'—Liverpool, London, and Globe, £2,200 on machinery and plant, and £3OO on building ; Standard, £3OO on machinery and plant; Northern, £IOOO on building; Guardian,. £2OOO on stock Sun, £IOOO on stock ; United £3OO on stock ; South British, £I7OO on stock and £3OO on plant the loss exceeded the insurance by. about £12,000. The plant was valued at about £7,000., building £3OOO and the stock at between eleven and twelve thousand. The stock was a I heavy preparation for the Christmas trade, and in another month would have been very small. The., books alone were saved. ‘
