DEATH OF A PIONEER.

(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last night.

James Chapman Smith, of Greenfield, one of the pioneer agriculturists of Otago, died this morning, aged 78. He came out to Nelson in 1842, and removed to Otago in 1848. After being in business for some years he removed to Tokomairiro, and grew the first crop of wheat in the district. Later on he purchased what became afterwards known as Greenfield, which he converted from rough pasture to one of the best managed properties in Otago. Ho leaves three sons and four daughters.
